SASD report on sustainable development in Sullivan County | Produced a major report on sustainable development, including the economics of it, to the Sullivan County legislature.
- Initiated a proposal for Sullivan County Wind Market Assessment that resulted in the identification of $500,000,000/year wind resource.
- Secured a grant for a 15kw solar electric system in collaboration with the Sullivan County Division of Planning for a county building.
- Prepared and presented a proposal on the economics of solar electric (photo voltaic) production and savings to Sullivan County legislators, several Town Boards and civic organizations. SASD has done design work on many buildings, provided connection with renewable energy companies and given technical and financial advice when requested.
- Produced a tool for evaluating the sustainability of economic projects which is ready for initial application and refinement using select governmental and semi-governmental agents to assist.
- Developed principles for sustainable development which should serve as a guide not only for SASD, but for the county and other agencies involved with economic development.
- Prepared and presented a proposal to county legislators on a potential 10MW wind farm opportunity for county ownership that would deliver at least a million dollars of income a year to the county treasury, and perhaps as much as two million, offsetting between 3% and 6% of the county’s tax requirements on this one modest project alone. SASD has also informed the legislators that it has the connections within the wind development business and is willing to donate time to help Sullivan County with considerations and development regarding this initial energy development project.
- Established financial connections to build for the County between 30 and 100 MW of county-owned or co-owned wind energy turbine projects that could offset much of the tax base for the County. Such a project would make Sullivan County an even more highly desirable place to live and to do business, as well as become a responsible clean energy exporter. Such a massive wind project would also provide many jobs for several years during construction as well as several good jobs maintaining these systems.
- Prepared and presented a proposal to Sullivan County legislators on the economics and means to erect photovoltaic (PV) panels, which not only would be environmentally responsible, but would save the County significant expenditures. SASD has let the County know that it is available to provide connections to experts as well as provide its own expertise to help with considerations and development of its PV infrastructure.
- Conducted several basic and advanced public workshops to homeowners and small business owners on their potential use of alternate energy as well as how to build or modify present structures for improved energy efficiency and other energy saving techniques. The workshops have been attended by homeowners, business owners, architects and builders, and were very well received. SASD is planning on conducting several more basic workshops this coming summer.
